2011 Monday February 14: Indy Car And Daytona 200 Winner Joe Leonard Is Guest Of Honor At The HMSA Champion’s Grand Prix February 26, 27 At Thunderhill Raceway Park With Special Guest George Follmer. Joe Leonard will be the guest of honor for the HMSA Champion’s Grand Prix at Thunderhill Raceway Park, February 26-27, 2011. Leonard will share his experiences from a lifetime in both motorcycle, and car racing with the participants and spectators. Joe was a multiple winner in Champ/Indy Cars. Road racing great George Follmer will be a fellow Champion guest of HMSA with Leonard. “Joe is the American John Surtees,” said Cris Vandagriff, HMSA President. “Like John, he has won Championships on both two, and four wheels and I am very pleased that he has accepted our invitation to join us.” The versatility that Leonard displayed throughout his racing career earned the San Jose, Calif. racer three AMA Grand National Championship titles and two USAC National Championship crowns.
Leonard won the first AMA Grand National Championship Series in 1954 and won it again in 1956 and 1957. His record totals 27 wins, including the 1957 and 1958 Daytona 200. He retired from motorcycle racing at the completion of the 1961 season and turned his attention to auto racing. After finishing third at Indianapolis in A.J. Foyt's team car in 1967, Leonard put the controversial turbine-powered Lotus “wedge” on the pole in 1968. His severely restricted version of the “whooshmobile” was in or near the lead all day until mechanical failure near the end cost Leonard perhaps his best chance at racing's ultimate single prize. Greater glory awaited as Leonard reached the top of the Indy Car world in convincing style by winning consecutive USAC Championship Car Season titles in 1971 and 1972. Leonard raced in the USAC Championship Car series in the 1964-1974 seasons, with 98 career starts including the 1965-1973 Indianapolis 500. He finished in the top ten 60 times, including six wins: three times at Milwaukee (1965, 1970, 1972), and once each at Ontario (1971), Brooklyn (1972), and Pocono (1972). His brilliant career was cut short by serious foot injuries suffered in the California 500 in 1974.
In 1991, he was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in the Motorcycles category. In 1998 he was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. George Follmer, Trans-Am champion in 1972 and 1976, Can-Am champion in 1972, SCCA United States Road Racing Champion Series1965, and USAC, Formula One and NASCAR Winston Cup racer, will be joining Leonard at the Champion’s Grand Prix. For more information on the Champion’s Grand Prix at Thunderhill Raceway Park, please visit www.hmsausa.com. HMSA produces spectator events in addition to club and special invitational events. 2010 Thursday December 17: Tony Singer Founder Of Automobilia Monterey And Vintageautoposters.com Gave An Audience Some Great Ideas And Tips On Restoring, Preserving, Collecting And Displaying Great Original Auto Related Posters At Yesterdays AutoVino Racers And Enthusiasts Lunch. Tony is a member of the International Vintage Poster Dealers Association. Just a few of the extensive items he spoke about included the necessity to properly linen mount and anti acid treat valuable poster to preserve them. The period inks must be treated carefully to preserve their vibrant colors. When displayed they should be shielded from UV light by proper framing using UV film on windows. If not framed they should be stored flat in the dark.
Many rare posters now sell at prices ranging from a thousand to many tens of thousands of dollars and have been rising in values for years. The unique ones are increasingly difficult to find. He will help collectors seeking to acquire one or a series about whatever subjects they are interested in. This can include marques, years of great events at a single track or great legendary racing tracks and more.
He stressed the limited number of truly original event and auto promoting posters available. Many of the famous racing event posters from tracks like Monaco have been reproduced and although fun to display or to decorate a garage with, they are not truly collectable.
