2013 Tuesday February 5: Urgent Notice To Racers And Motorsport Sanctioning Bodies From SFI: Non Flame Resistant Racing Suits Being Sold

Mike Hurst, Technical Manager SFI Foundation, Inc., has issued an important safety notice. It has been brought to the attention of the SFI Foundation that certain driver protective suits being manufactured and distributed into the marketplace present a unique and serious threat to the safety of the drivers.

These suits incorporate an outer layer of material that is neither flame nor heat resistant, and will melt at relatively low temperatures. These suits are commonly identified by the nature of their graphics, which are achieved by a process called dye sublimation. Rather than using more traditional graphic methods such as patches attached to, or embroidery sewn into the suit, this process provides for complex and vivid graphics, which are actually imbedded directly into the outer material layer.

Dye sublimation is currently being used on synthetic materials (e.g. Nylon, Cordura, and Polyester) that have little or no fire or heat resistant properties. Dye sublimated synthetic driver suits have been distributed for use in motorsport disciplines in which the sanctioning bodies have no minimum standards for driver protective clothing.

Currently there are no participants in the SFI Specification 3.2A programs using approved materials incorporating the dye sublimation process. Nylon Cordura, or Polyester driver suit layers or panels, with or without dye sublimation, are not certified or identified by the manufacturer as meeting SFI Spec 3.2A, or any other accepted industry wide standard.

Should technical inspectors or scrutineers observe a driver suit which incorporates the dye sublimation graphic process and / or Nylon, Cordura or Polyester panels or layers, the driver should be made aware of the potential danger of wearing such a suit in competition, and should be directed to contact the manufacturer immediately.

Please note that Racewear Manufacturing/Awesome Racewear has previously manufactured and sold dye-sublimated race suits that fully met SFI Spec 3.2A, and the certification of those suits remain valid. Info: SFI, 15708 Pomerado Road, Suit N208, Poway, CA 92064. Call 858-451-8868 or fax 858-451-9268 or visit http://www.sfifoundation.com/

A panel of experts, led by national race commentator and magazine editor Dick Berggren, will discuss Supermodified racing at the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen, NY, on March 2. The group will have a special focus on the Oswego (NY) Speedway, located about 90 miles northeast of Watkins Glen. The Saturday, March 2, talk will be at 1 p.m. at the Racing Research Center located at 610 S. Decatur St., Watkins Glen. It is free and open to all.

For more than three decades, Berggren was a pit reporter for NASCAR TV coverage. He retired in 2012, after spending his last 12 years with Fox. After more than 20 years writing and editing for racing magazines, Berggren founded Speedway Illustrated.

Berggren will lead a panel that includes Steve Miller, longtime Super Modified driver and builder; Jamie Moore, longtime driver and team owner; Perry Adams, vintage Supermodified racer; and Dan Kapuscinski, public relations specialist at the Oswego Speedway.

Berggren has described the five-eighths-mile paved Oswego Speedway, near the shores of Lake Ontario, as “the most storied of all Super Modified tracks.” A Supermodified car owned by Adams will be on display at the Racing Research Center from mid-January through the March 2 talk. The Racing Research Center is a non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization founded in 1999 and located in Watkins Glen, also home of the Watkins Glen International race track. 2012 Monday July 30: The Possible Historic Champ/Indy Car Showcase at Auto Club Speedway September 15, 2012 During IZOD IndyCAR Series Race Weekend Will Not Be Held.

It looked like there was to be a HCICA Showcase event at this 2012 IndyCAR Series race at Auto Club Speedway this September. The track has decided that it would be mutually beneficial to have more time for a major effort and to consider the show for the 2013 season. “We of course are disappointed that we will not have a chance to run during the 2012 IZOD IndyCAR Series Championship weekend. The HCICA Showcase was a great opportunity for HCICA, the car owners, the spectators, as well as IndyCAR” said Pam Shatraw, HCICA Events Manager. “We hope that the success of the 2012 program leads to a regular IndyCAR Series race at AutoClub Speedway. We are looking forward to getting our 2013 opportunities launched early,” said Dan Davis Chairman, Historic Champ Indy/Car Association. For more info call Pam Shatraw, Events Manager 650-321-1114 (CA).

2012 Monday June 18: Congratulations To All Involved With The Delta Wing Sports Racing Car, Which Added A Huge Spirit Of Innovation And Lateral Creativity To Auto Racing In Its Debut At Last Weekend’s LeMans 24 Hour Race
This was originally a proposal for Indy Car. It took designer Bob Bowley and his team, Dan Gurney’s construction facility and staff, Don Panoz’s finance, Duncan Dayton’s Highcroft Racing Team, Nissan sponsorship and engine tech and the LeMans organizers for their Garage 56 innovation project to all make it actually race and add a glimpse some of racing’s future. Other innovations shown in this event, such as Audi’s winning LMPI hybrid and Toyota’s hybrid challenger, were great tributes to their respective company’s racing and innovation spirit. There were many other teams, drivers and tales that will add to the “future history” in vintage racing.

2012 Friday March 9: Branson Spring 2012 Is On!
Branson, Missouri was hit with an EF3 (or stronger) tornado on Leap Day, tearing a path down Highway 76 and through the new Branson Landing development, home of the semi-annual Branson Auction.
The Cox family’s Candlestick restaurant – the place to go in Branson for great food and wine – was de-roofed. In the process its “CAND E STI K” sign (we’ve never seen it with every 60’s neon letter working) was distributed over a two block area. Remarkably, the restaurant itself, built on tall pilings on the edge of Mt. Branson overlooking Lake Taneycomo, survived.
The sinuously-shaped Branson Landing Hilton, site of the auction since fall of 2007, was devastated. Draperies waved like flags from its myriad broken windows. But the Convention Center survived, and the Spring Branson Auction, April 20-21, 2012 is on.
Determination, resiliency and commitment in the face of adversity can overcome most things. There are few organizations better equipped with those attributes than the Cox family’s Branson Auction and we’ll be there to help them, and Branson, recover.

2012 Monday March 5: Amelia Island Concours D’Elegance To Open, Sunday March, 11 At 10:02 AM With Flyover By Three Classic Airplanes. The 17th Annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance will open with a historic three-plane flyover at 10:02 AM on Sunday March 11th. In keeping with “The Amelia’s” theme of rare and desirable cars and maximum fun, “The Amelia’s” flyover will not only be unique but historically accurate.
The three plane Amelia flyover will be led by David Martin’s 300-horsepower aerobatic Breitling CAP 232 monoplane. His wingman will be David Kicklighter in the Breitling Extra 300L aerobatic two-seater. The series Extra is so fast and maneuverable that it was chosen as the chase plane for Burt Rutan’s Space Ship One.
Representing the classic trans-war period of aviation is David Marco’s award-winning Lockheed 12A, one of just eight still flying. Marco’s graceful 1938 Lockheed underwent a two-year historically meticulous 10,000-hour restoration that presents the “Electra Junior” as it appeared in the late thirties. The twin-engine, double-tail Lockhead 12A was considered the “Lear Jet of the late thirties” and marked the dawn of the American business aviation. Capable of 225 mph in 1938 the six-passenger Electra Junior was of all metal construction and even featured an on-board lavatory. It was made famous by the Academy Award winning 1942 film Casablanca. Marco’s Electra Junior was originally purchased by Phillips Petroleum in 1939, but was “drafted” into the US Army until 1945 when it was returned to Phillips Petroleum. Since 2011 it has been based in Jacksonville.
“There’s nothing like the sound of a radial engine,” Said Warner, “Witnessing this flyover will be a bit like time travel with the sight and sounds of the two Breitling aerobatic planes and the Lockhead 12A above a field of classic and race cars.”
The 2012 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance will be held Sunday March 11 on the 10th and 18th fairways of the Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach adjacent to The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island: The preceding two days are filled with special events including: Two special racing seminars, an RM Auction, The Breitling cocktail party, the Mercedes-Benz Banquet honoring Vic Elford, a special tribute to Sam Posy, Special tours, new car drives, rallies and much more. This is the concours with more road racing and oval cars than perhaps any other. The shows foundation has donated nearly $1.8 million to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Inc. and other charities of Florida’s coast since its inception in 1996. For More info call 904-636-0027 (FL) or visit www.ameliaconcours.org

This event, south of London, about a 1.5-hour train ride attracts over 120,000 spectators each year and over 300 invited vintage racers with pre 1967 racing cars with history. The event is regarded as the greatest theatre in vintage racing. It is held on the grass airfield and access road racing circuit where great international races were held after WWII through 1966. The last international race before the track was closed until it’s reopening in 1998 was won by Mike Spence in a Parnell two-liter Sports Racer ahead of a great field.

2012 Monday January 23: If The Strong Auction Sale Prices At The Various Arizona Collectable Car Auctions Are An Indicator, Then The Year Will Be Exciting For Collectable And Racing Car Buyers And Sellers. Rick Carey, Victory Lane Magazine’s auction reporter notes for racing and sports car enthusiasts one highlight was the Alloy 300SL Mercedes Gullwing Coupe sold at just over four million dollars at Gooding. The bookend was a similar car, but with steel bodywork at Barrett-Jackson at just over two million dollars.
Rick’s reports and impressions from RM Auctions, Russo and Steel Auctions, Bonhams, Gooding and Barrett-Jackson add up to a year when again, great cars with great history and superb preparation were bringing excellent prices, yet good value, in light of future prospects. At the same time, ordinary fun collectable drivers were bringing more than expected prices. The buyers and excitement at auction week were there in abundance.

The estate grounds were a World War II grass runway for Spitfire fighter planes during World War II. The peripheral roads were converted into a road racing circuit after the war. Both club and international races were held there through late 1966. Lord March reopened the circuit for the annual Fall Goodwood Revival vintage-racing weekend saluting 1966 and earlier cars that raced at Goodwood plus had a vintage motorcycle grid. The event is grand theater with recreations of historic businesses, WWII Spitfires and Mustangs taking off from the grass airfield, and a requirement for spectators to appear in period apparel. Race Car Entries for this world-class event are highly sought after. The presentation of this event complete with historic references will be a treat.

2011 Thursday November 3: Grand Prix To Return To Detroit’s Belle Isle In 2012 Reported By Bob Capps In front of hundreds of journalists attending Chevrolet’s 100th Anniversary events at Detroit’s Renaissance Center, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing announced that the Detroit Grand Prix will return to the 2.1 mile Belle Isle race course June 1 –3, 2012. Bing was joined by Mark Reuss, GM North American president, Roger Penske, chairman of Penske Corporation, GM Motorsports executive Jim Campbell and Randy Bernard, CEO of Indy Car.
Bing stated that Chevrolet has signed a three-year agreement for the IZOD Indy Car race to be known as The Chevy Indy Grand Prix presented by shopautoweek.com. Along with the return of the Grand Prix, the weekend’s race program will also include a Firestone Indy Lights Series race, the Detroit Sports Car Challenge, a Grand Am Rolex Series race a Cadillac V-Series Challenge, a Pirelli World Challenge race, the latter two showcasing Cadillac and Camaro race vehicles in action. Reuss announced that Chevy will re-enter the IndyCar series in 2012 with a new twin-turbo, direct-injected V6 racing engine. Team Penske, Andretti Autosport and Panther Racing have already signed on to use the new engine.
Organizers said upgrades will be made to the Belle Isle course and the race will be televised live by ABC.
The last Belle Isle race was held in 2008 and the 2009 event was cancelled because of the ailing Detroit economy. Much credit for the return of the race must go to Roger Penske who never stopped talking about the benefits the race would bring to Detroit.

2011 Friday October 28: Racemaker Press Wins This Year’s Cugnot and Ingersoll Awards Finn’s Caribbean Capers and O’Keefe Winner’s Database Recognized by SAH. (Boston, MA) October 27, 2011 – Racemaker Press took home two coveted awards from the Society of Automotive Historians annual banquet in Hershey this year. Joel Finn’s Caribbean Capers: The Cuban Grand Prix Races of 1957, 1958 & 1960, published by Racemaker Press in collaboration with Garnet Hill Publishing, won the Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot Award for Outstanding Book of 2010, and the E.P. Ingersoll Award for Excellence in Presentation of Automotive History in Nonprint media was awarded to the O’Keefe Winners Database: A Searchable Comprehensive Digital Database of Motor Racing Events 1895-2010, by James O’Keefe.

Publisher Joseph Freeman accepted the awards, along with author, Joel Finn, at the Society’s annual meeting in Hershey, PA. “Racemaker Press is passionate about researching, recording, compiling, and publishing works that make a real contribution to automotive history,” Mr. Freeman said. “We are honored to receive this recognition from the society, of which I have been past president and am a life-long member.”

Caribbean Capers: The Cuban Grand Prix Races of 1957, 1958 & 1960, a first-hand account by noted automotive historian and author, Joel Finn, captures the dramatic story of Cuba’s major sports car races, with all the international finance, political intrigue and competitive action that characterized the island nation at that time. With more than 500 historic images of the cars, drivers and events – many never before published – and numerous meticulously compiled charts of the race entries and results, the book received rave reviews, and has been selling to a world-wide audience.

“I was one of the timing officials at the races in 1958, and gathered as much original information, first hand accounts, and rare, official records from organizers as possible, with the intention of someday creating this book,” author Joel Finn said as he accepted the award. “I’m grateful for the Society’s recognition of this book as a story that needed to be told, of a time in racing history like no other. Thank you.”

The Ingersoll Award was bestowed to Jim O’Keefe’s amazing undertaking to create the most comprehensive listing of motor racing events available, The O’Keefe Winners Database: A Searchable Comprehensive Digital Database of Motor Racing Events 1895-2010. This fully searchable database, containing the winner of over 22,000 auto races from all over the world, contains a whopping 250,000 pieces of data updated through the end of the 2010 season. Available via the website www.racemaker.com, as a download, or by purchase of a CD to install on your computer, The O’Keefe Winners Database enables quick research, with guided instructions for answers to simple or complex queries.

“I’m thrilled that the Society saw the value of this digital research database, and recognized the tremendous undertaking that Jim O’Keefe embarked upon, and has been working at, for over 40 years,” Joe Freeman said, accepting the award for Mr. O’Keefe.

Both titles are available at www.racemaker.com, or by calling the Boston office at 617-723-6533 (MA), or email to: orders@racemaker.com.

2011 Friday September 30: Performance Racing Industry Offers Opportunities for Businesses Active in Vintage Racing Market December 1-3, 2011. Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, FL.
“The parts and the savvy to win races in 2012, including vintage race teams looking to be competitive on a tight budget, will all be in one exhibit hall at one time at the 24th Annual Performance Racing Industry Trade Show. It is being held the first week in December in Orlando, FL. Entrepreneurs active in the vintage racing market will find the new product lines and shop equipment to increase sales, improve efficiency, raise quality, add performance, and strengthen profitability in 2012,” said Steve Lewis.

PRI has been called gearhead heaven, and a racer’s candy store. It’s also becoming known as the three biggest business days in racing.

Over 40,000 racing business people and professional race teams will be in attendance, coming from across the United States and 65 countries to shop and buy the new racing parts being introduced for the 2012 racing season. 1,100 companies exhibit their new product lines in racing. The technical personnel working in the exhibits, as well as combined experience of others attending the show, represents a gigantic annual gathering of the finest minds in the country when it comes to speed.

Vintage shop owners and race teams can come face to face with suppliers active in the vintage racing market such as Mark Williams Enterprises, Performance Friction, XRP, Tilton, Hawk, Wilwood, Setrab, ATL, Joe Gibbs, Driven Racing Oil, Fuel Safe, and many more.

From race engine components to suspension parts, precision machining to fabrication equipment, whatever the challenge, the solution will probably be in Orlando.

Over 100 companies in the PRI Trade Show’s Machinery Row display the latest advances in precision machining equipment with the machinery wired and available for live demonstrations.

“The PRI Trade Show is where you go when you want to get absolutely current with the latest in racing technology,” said Steve Lewis, producer of the PRI Trade Show. “Plus the expertise of the people gathered at the PRI Trade always amazes me. I believe there’s no racing challenge that can’t be solved there. A visit to the PRI Trade Show is the best first step to winning a race season in 2012. For racing businesses active in the vintage racing market, there are many revenue and profit opportunities to be seized,” continued Lewis. “It’s fun to visit with the racing companies that you already know, but the PRI Trade Show also offers those moments when you discover something new and important and unforeseen. The ‘surprise factor’ is a big part of the fun at the PRI Trade Show.”

The show is timed to allow racing retailers, race engine builders, race car builders, professional race teams, motorsports engineers, and more the opportunity to shop all the new racing products, make purchase decisions, and have them in stock for the start of the next racing season.
